Our spring performance this year is the play Abigail's Party, made famous by Alison Steadman's mesmerising portrayal of pretentious hostess Beverly in the suberb "play for today" version broadcast in 1977.

…Laurence and Beverly are entertaining new neighbours Tony and Angela to drinks and nibbles, also invited is Susan whose teenage daughter Abigail is having her first party. On the surface goodwill abounds but as more and more alcohol is consumed…

Directed by Annette Penny this latest amateur production by the M.A.D.S. team is a satirical portrayal of aspiring middle class social behaviour that captivating and compelling.

doubt

Doubt
Drama directed by J. Stanley
With Meryl Streep Phillip Seymore Hoffman and Amy Adams
It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn (Seymore Hoffman) is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvie (Meryl Steep), the iron-gloved Principal. Suspicions that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to new black student stirs Sister Aloysius into a crusade to both unearth the truth. Without a shred of evidence except her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn, a battle that threatens to tear apart the Church and school. The main conflict is irresistibly gripping, and Viola Davis, as one student's mother, steals the movie with a performance of such power and dignity, it might break your heart.' Milk
Drama directed by Gus Van Sant
With Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch
“Milk” explores the life of the first openly gay politician to be elected to public office in California, Harvey Milk. Gay Rights Activist, friend. lover. Unifier. Politician. Fighter. Icon. Inspiration. Hero. His life changed history, and his courage changed lives. Set in San Francisco in the late 1970s, the film gives a rich insight into Milk's complex relations with the politics of the time, as well as those with his friends, foes, admirers and lifelong rival, Dan White.A wonderfully evocative film, radiating with warmth and humour, bristling too with righteous rage, about Harvey Milk (Daily Telegraph)

Grand

Gran Torino

with Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang and Ahney Her
Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) is a widower, grumpy, borderline-hateful old man who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbours. A Korean War veteran his prize possession is a 1973 Gran Torino. When his neighbour Tao, a young Hmong teenager, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Tao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them form the gangs that foul their neighborhood. This wise, likeable and extremely entertaining picture is a must-see. It is already the highest-grossing film in Eastwood's illustrious career. (Daily Mail)
